08 November 2007 - Poppy Day

Poppy Day, when the South African Legion holds a street collection to gather funds to assist in the welfare work among military veterans takes place on the Saturday nearest to Remembrance Day.

When one buys a poppy on Poppy Day one pays tribute to those who died, and one is helping those who are left and bear the scars of war.

11 November 2007 - Poppy Day collection record

Organised by a resident of Rosedale the Poppy Day collection for 2008 was slightly more than R33 000.00. It was less than the 2006 collection but the Cape Town Branch is aiming for at least R40 000.00 in 2008. The Legion is fortunate in having the full support of The Gunners’ Association and of the Cape Garrison Artillery with collections on this important fund-raising day.

05 January 2008 - Poppy Day Run

In co-operation with the Western Province Athletics Association and the Hewat Athletics Club a most successful Run was held on Saturday, 5th January 2008, with over 740 runners taking part.

It was held over a course from Blaauwberg Strand (Big Bay) to Melkbosstrand and back, a distance of 15 km. Close to 750 runners took part and most wore a poppy on the vests. Not only a fund-raising event it was also an important public relations effort. The first such run, in 2007, attracted just over 680 runners.

The ‘run’ will again take place in 2009 on Saturday, 3 January, and the SA Legion is hoping for a large increase in the number of athletes taking part.

21 June 2008 - Tobruk Dinner

When Tobruk fell to Panzerarmee Afrika on 21 June 1942 over 10 700 South Africans went into ‘the Bag’ to spend the rest of the war as prisoners of war (POWs). Together with British, Indian and Gurkha troops about 30 000 men became prisoners on that fateful day.

South ASfrica’s losses at Delville Wood are remembered but there has never been a thought to those who lost almost three years of their lives while sitting in German or Italian prison camps.

The South African Legion, Cape Town Branch remembers this at an annual dinner on 21 June (or nearest suitable date) each year. Held at Rosedale it is well attended by veterans and by serving Reserve Force members.

03 January 2009 - Next Year's Poppy Day Run

The Poppy Day ‘run’ will again take place in 2009 on Saturday, 3 January, and the SA Legion is hoping for a large increase in the number of athletes taking part.
